New Ecoswag: Kids Coloring & Activity Books

The Difference Is CLEAR - New drinkware for 2011

One of the reasons I blog is to keep our clients on top of the newest trends in promotional products. One of the biggest so far this year is dual-wall glass drinkware, like these 10oz Glass Tumblers we recently added to our Ecoswag.com collection:

Go Nuts With Your Logo!

I love my iPhone - nearly everyone I know seems to have one too - so I'm always stoked when I find new, eco-responsible swag items that also happen to be iPhone accessories. Solar phone chargers have been available in the promotional products industry for a couple of years, but this is the first one I've seen that works with iPhone. This Solar Phone Charger is a brand-new item from one of our favorite "green" promotional products lines and we added it to Ecoswag.com yesterday... just in time for holiday giving!

 This cute little gadget stores the energy from the sun's rays for up to 50 hours. Simply plug the charged unit into your phone or other portable device for between 50-85 minutes to recharge the battery. In a pinch, this could be a life saver for situations involving a dead cell battery and no place to plug in a phone!

Eco Pens for Colorful Logos

If you have a company logo that takes 3 or more colors to imprint, finding natural-looking, eco-friendly pens can be a real challenge. While Ecoswag.com offers a selection of plastic pens made from recycled and biodegradable material, the snazzy earth-friendly plastics are not nearly as popular with our clients as the humble paper-barrel types.

The feedback from our clients is that they want their pens to look obviously eco-responsible, which is what I half-jokingly call "Granola Appeal" - they really like that natural look of the recycled paper barrels. Unfortunately, that type of pen is normally screen-printed, which limits you to one imprint color or two at the most.

I ran into this challenge about a week ago with a new client that plans Green Events. They have a really cute 3-color logo that just doesn't translate well into a 1-or-2 color version... and they needed eco-pens for an upcoming event. After searching high & low I came across the Soho Eco-Pen & Highlighter, shown here, which is available with a full-color digital imprint on the barrel for a very reasonable price. The paper barrel is accented with colorful PLA biodegradable plastic accents, and 81% of the material used to make these pens is either recycled or plant-based.

The other eco-pen option I found comes from the same supplier, but is a simpler  design I think looks a bit like a drinking straw in a wrapper. This Bonsai Recycled Paper Pen is also offered with a full-color digital imprint on the barrel (in the natural color only). It's made with 50% recycled content and is priced at under $1.00.

There are a few caveats I think it's only fair to mention when it comes to ordering either of these pens, which have to do with the imprint size, proof process and imprint quality.

First off, the imprint areas on both of these pens are limited to 1/4" in height. Many logos simply aren't readable when shrunk down to that size. If that's the case with your logo, you're going to be better off going with an eco-plastic pen if you need multi-color printing or else using a 1-color version of your logo on one of our other paper-barrel pens.

Another consideration is the opacity of the full-color digital printing. When pens are screen printed the ink is opaque, but not so with digital color printing. The colors are more transparent with this process, which makes them appear muted due to the brown color of the barrel. This also means it's not possible to match Pantone colors exactly. We had to darken the colors of our client's logo considerably in order to get the contrast needed to look good on the brown barrel.

Lastly, because of the issues I've described above, the proofing process on these pens takes longer than most because instead of an email proof, an actual pen is printed and overnighted to our client for approval. This is a good thing, as you get to see EXACTLY what your pens will look like so there are no surprises... and there's no extra charge for this service. This does need to be taken into consideration when it comes to the order timeframe, however, as it adds a couple of extra days to the process.

With that being said, these two pens are a great choice for the right clients. Both are also available with a 1-color screenprint logo, which allows for a larger imprintable area, darker ink coverage and faster turnaround (48 hours on most orders).

Hungry for some tasty new swag ideas?

When times get tough, people appreciate little pick-me-ups like cookies and chocolate. Small wonder that promotional industry sales of custom-branded food and candy actually rose in 2009, a year that saw declining sales in all other categories of swag. Individually custom-packaged candies and snacks are versatile and inexpensive marketing items with wide appeal. Unlike any other giveaway item you can buy to promote your brand, giveaways of food or candy engage ALL five of your recipient's senses and subconsiously tie your brand to the positive (and highly personal) experience of enjoying a tasty treat.

The most important things you need to be aware of when buying edible swag items are quality, storage and shelf life. Quality and taste are of prime importance - you should insist on trying samples of any food gifts you're considering before you buy them. The last thing you want is to associate your brand image with waxy, cheap chocolate or stale popcorn!

Along those same lines, when dealing with food you have to think about storage and distribution. Never buy edible swag without a game plan for how it will be distributed - within 1-2 weeks if possible. These are not items to sit in the storage room waiting for the next event!

When considering chocolate, temperatures must be taken into account. In summer months you'll pay extra for special packaging and expedited shipping on promotional chocolate orders so they don't melt in transit. Therefore, in warm climates or summer weather you may want to consider granola bars, pretzels or other healthy, non-chocolate alternatives.

New Ecoswag: Anvil Recycled T Shirt

Here at Ecoswag I do my best to stay afloat on the eco-friendly promotional product wave. As more of our suppliers expand their green product offerings, I have my hands full (to say the least).

It is an exciting time in our industry because of the innovation that's going into the development of new, green items. From recycled electronics to recycled elephant poo, I’m having fun keeping you in the know about what’s new on the eco side of the promo industry.

This blog post is to introduce you to our new Recycled Cotton T Shirt made by Anvil, and why this is a terrific, budget-friendly alternative to more expensive organic cotton t-shirts.

If you've been in the market for eco-friendly custom t-shirts over the past few years your selection has been pretty limited. Unless you have the budget for premium priced bamboo or hemp shirts, organic cotton t-shirts have been the only game in town... and let's be honest - they're spendy compared to plain old cotton shirts. There's also some debate about just how planet-friendly organic cotton really is, since it takes more land and resources to grow than non-organic cotton.
